Handling Foster Child Adoptions in Florida

Adoption Lawyers in Jacksonville, FL Assisting Foster Parents

When foster parents to minor children decide that they would like to make their arrangements permanent and file for formal adoption, it can be a wonderful thing for all parties involved. In most cases, the family courts in places like Duval and Clay County favor this type of permanent commitment to parenting—especially since the existing foster care arrangement can provide valuable insight.

However, foster parent adoptions in Florida are not automatic, and it is always beneficial to employ the services of a family law attorney who is experienced in adoptions in the state of Florida. The Jacksonville adoption attorneys at Owenby Law, P.A. represent individuals and couples who are interested in moving from being foster parents to adoptive parents.

What Are the Requirements?

If you are a foster parent who is considering adoption, you probably will not be surprised that you will have to meet additional qualifications similar to those involved in becoming a foster parent in order to formally adopt a minor child. Adoptions can take six to eight months, and this period is very stressful for many foster parents.

In some cases, in addition to the Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting (MAPP) course that you completed to become a foster parent, you may have to:

  • Complete the Parents' Resources for Information Development Education (PRIDE) preparation class
  • Undergo a home inspection to obtain your license to adopt
