When you walk into a law office, you want to know the person leading your case sees you as more than a file. At Owenby Law, P.A., that sense of connection starts with Senior Attorney Joy N. Owenby. She built our firm on a simple idea: people who feel unheard in the legal system deserve someone who will stand up and speak for them.
Joy says it best in her own words: “I’ve wanted to be an attorney since I was 12 years old. I always wanted to help people… where others couldn’t communicate their case to the court and needed representation. I wanted to be that person.”
If you want to hear her story directly, take a moment to watch this short video.
Why Joy Chose The Law & What That Means For You
From a young age, Joy felt called to help people who struggle to tell their story. That early drive did not fade. It guided her through years of school, work, and long hours until she reached the courtroom as an attorney.
In the video, she shares how that calling took shape after law school. Her first role as an attorney was with the State of Florida’s Guardian Ad Litem Program. As she explains, “My first job as an attorney after law school, I was a guardian ad litem attorney, where I was there for the child victims, and it just put something in my heart.”
Those cases involved dependency, abuse, neglect, abandonment, and criminal law. While parents and other adults already had lawyers, many of the children did not have a true voice in court. Joy stepped into that space and spoke for them. That work left a lasting mark on how she approaches every case we handle today.
How A Child-Focused Mission Became ‘Putting Families First’
Joy’s experience representing children shaped the original vision for our firm. When she opened the doors in 2004, she built Owenby Law, P.A. around a clear promise. As she shares, “When I officially first opened in 2004, our slogan was putting children first.”
Over time, our work expanded. We began guiding parents through divorce and family law disputes, helping loved ones with estate planning and probate, and defending individuals facing criminal accusations. The clients who came to us were not just children or just adults. They were entire families, each one carrying a mix of legal and personal worries.
Joy describes how that growth evolved into our long-standing focus today: “As we’ve grown and we’ve done so much more than just family law and dependency law, it’s now and has been for 20 years, putting families first.”
That shift from “putting children first” to “putting families first” reflects what we see every day. A divorce affects children and parents. A criminal charge can impact a whole household. An estate plan can protect several generations. Joy’s journey led our firm to treat every legal matter as part of a larger family story.
The Path That Shaped Joy’s Perspective & Our Firm
Joy’s road to founding Owenby Law, P.A. did not start in a courtroom. Before law school, she taught high school, worked as a deputy clerk, and took on marketing roles while earning her Master of Public Administration. She later served as an administration manager for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of the Census.
Each of these roles taught her something different: how to explain complex ideas, how courts operate behind the scenes, and how large institutions function. That mix of experiences gave her a grounded view of how real people interact with systems that often feel confusing or intimidating.
During law school and early in her legal career, she continued to build on that foundation. Joy served as a judicial intern for a family law judge in the 4th Judicial Circuit and as a certified legal intern in the State Attorney’s Office, Special Assault Division. Those positions gave her insight into both sides of the courtroom and deepened her focus on sensitive, high-stakes matters.
All of this background now informs how she leads our team as a Senior Attorney. When clients sit across the table from us, they meet a firm shaped by someone who has seen the legal system from many angles and never lost sight of the people at the center.
How Joy Works With Individuals & Families
Joy’s legal practice includes divorce and family law, estate planning, and criminal defense. No matter the type of case, she approaches each matter with the same guiding question: what is this person or family going through, and how can we help them move forward?
Her bio notes that she “places herself in clients’ shoes” to understand their feelings and goals. That means she listens first. She wants to know what keeps you up at night, what you fear most about the process, and what outcome will truly help you and your loved ones.
This approach aligns with how we serve clients across our offices in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Orange Park. We offer:
- Compassionate advocacy: We recognize that divorce, dependency cases, criminal charges, and end-of-life planning often involve some of the hardest moments in a person’s life.
- Personalized counsel: We do not rely on one-size-fits-all strategies. We take time to learn your goals and tailor our approach.
- Guidance at every stage: We explain each step, answer questions, and keep you informed throughout your case.
- Flexible payment options: We offer payment plans to help make quality legal representation more accessible.
- Strategies for lasting results: We look beyond short-term fixes and help you plan for your future stability and peace of mind.
The values you hear in Joy’s video—giving a voice to those who struggle to speak for themselves and putting families first—shape how our entire team approaches your case.
