a man thinking and looking out of the windowEveryone experiences divorce differently. While divorce may be shorter and more seamless for some couples than others, there is no doubt that the process is never easy.

Below, our Jacksonville family law attorneys discuss what you may expect from the divorce process, both emotionally and financially.

Divorce Affects More Than Just You

It’s important to keep in mind that you are not the only person affected by your divorce. When children are involved, the process impacts them, too. It’s important to maintain open lines of communication with your children about the divorce and answer any questions that they may have tactfully and honestly.

Additionally, friends and family members may be saddened about the breakup of your marriage and worry about how it will affect relationships in the future. Make sure to carve out some time during the process to reassure those closest to you that this decision is being made in the best interests of everyone involved.

Your Assets May Not Be Divided Evenly

Florida is an equitable distribution state. This does not mean, however, that all marital assets will be divided equally. The court takes the following factors into consideration when dividing up property and other assets:

  • The length of time the couple was married

  • Each spouse’s financial and economic circumstances

  • Each spouse’s contribution to the marriage

  • Each spouse’s contribution to acquiring income

  • Sacrifices that either spouse made for the other’s career

  • Liabilities or debts incurred by either spouse

This is a Time of Change

Divorce involves a major shift in your life and, with it, comes new circumstances. Expect your standard of living and social network to change. Expect to have a different relationship with your ex-spouse than you have ever had before. Expect to have to explain the new dynamic to your children more than once, and be patient when doing so.

You made this decision for a reason. Keep that reason in mind when going through this process, and know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
