What Women Should Know About Social Security

Did you know nearly 60% of Social Security benefits recipients are women? That’s right. Because we are now living in the 21st century, more women are employed now than any other point in history. As a woman, there are a few things you should understand regarding social security and your right to obtain such benefits. To help you understand, we have answered some frequently asked questions.

1. I Have Worked My Whole Life. Am I Eligible for Benefits?

Man or woman, you are eligible for benefits if you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a minimum of 10 years, or 40 quarters. In addition, you must be no less than 62 years old.

2. What if My Husband and I Divorced?

You can still qualify for Social Security benefits if you and your spouse divorced. However, you must have been married to your ex-husband for no less than 10 years. It is important to keep in mind that you cannot remarry if you wish to collect benefits using your former spouse’s record unless any marriages that occurred after that particular one end by death, divorce, or annulment. Of course, you must be at least 62 years of age to be eligible, as well.

3. Can I Obtain Benefits if I am a Widow or a Divorced Widow?

Absolutely. You must be at least 60 years of age or 50 if you are considered disabled. If you choose to remarry after you are 60 years old, or 50 if you are considered disabled, your newer marriage will not ruin your chance of becoming eligible for survivor benefits.

4. If I Am Eligible for Two Benefits, Will I Receive Payment for Both?

If you qualify for two benefits, you will not receive both. Instead, you will be given the benefit that is worth the higher amount.
