Mending a Broken Heart

Whether you or your ex-spouse made the first move in the divorce process, it doesn’t mean that you’re not feeling pain in the aftermath. Spending years with someone also means many years of creating traditions together. When romantic holidays, such as Valentine’s day, are advertised everywhere — on TV, social media, and aisles and aisles of heart-shaped chocolate boxes in stores, it can be a painful reminder of Valentine’s Days past.

It may seem like an impossible time to get through, but know that it’s only temporary, and there are some things you can do to lift your mood and enjoy Valentine’s Day in many other ways. Here are some tips.

Practice Self-Care

Self-care may mean different things to different people. Taking care of your well-being and happiness during difficult times in your life is a crucial part of moving forward after a divorce. Self-care may include physical and positive mental health activities such as exercising, going for a walk, reading a book, and meditating. If you have a hobby or activity that you enjoy but haven’t been “into it” lately, that’s okay! There’s always time to start again.

Call on Friends and Family for Support

Having family and friends around when going through a difficult time can help you cope better. Try hosting a dinner gathering with your loved ones to lift your spirits. Bringing out some fun games and good conversation can keep your mind focused on things other than your divorce and Valentines’ Day.

Make Valentine’s Day Traditions With Your Children

If you have children, it goes without saying they are the one love that will always be there. Creating Valentine’s traditions with your children can be fun for everyone! Here are some fun ideas:

  • Read a love-themed bedtime story
  • Have an arts and crafts hour (cut out paper hearts, make homemade cards for family and friends)
  • Have a family movie night and watch a classic love story (The Princess and the Frog, The Princess Bride, or Frozen)
  • Bake heart-shaped cookies

Ask your children to help you with planning Valentine’s Day activities. The possibilities are endless!
